When does the weekend grow old?

Because I know that it’s Wednesday but I have to say the weekend was pretty lovely up here in lalaland.

Firstly there was the radio time with Domenico, which was super sprucetown excellent. Then there was lady’s bike polo on in Musgrave park, with the lovely Allie waving the mallet about with others of the Brisbane hardcourt crew.

Right beside them at the park was the Brisbane Freestyle Longboarding community having their first birthday which was basically helmet overload. Big time.

Sun was shining. Weather was sweet. Josh was even there. Sans lid this time, but dishing out some sweet cupcakes as a part of their birthday celebrations, recognising one year since their flood relief rollout event.

And that was just Saturday.

On Sunday, there was a long break on the training ride, somewhere around Murrarie but before the Gateway Bridge but it was all good by me. We waved to Jane and her smiling crew as we rolled out at lazy jerks o’clock getting well and truly fritzed by the time the smoothie was hitting the smooth spot.

Did you have a good weekend? How long til the next one? And how long til there’s a women’s CX in Melbourne? I heard some rumours and I will put it on my “training plan” if there’s truth to that there rumour.

Run rabbit run

According to my training plan*, I was due for a ride this morning.

According to Tweepland @ademack @gregvann @janvann @nicodonnell were all out at you know what o’clock while I was lying in bed.

According to the weather lady, Queensland just ended its wettest January in ages and so I felt less lazy and more justified that I have three bikes and hardly ever ride.**

So this morning I did something I hardly ever do.

I rode the Commuter Cup.

I’ve complained about this before because it is basically really unhelpful to pedestrians to hurtle up and down the Bicentennial Bikeway. Yet some mornings you get up too late for a proper ride and basically it’s super flat and going against the city flow it’s quite peaceful and really if on your way back you get over taken by some spiffy lady on a Salsa going about your pace but a bit faster – is it really that bad to hook on and just see where the ride takes you?

Effectively, it takes you past your work so you have to loop back later. But turns out Sonia has a newly built road/commuter bike with a rather fetching brooks saddle/tape combo.

I always take note if a woman has a nice saddle on her bike. Because usually – although not always – that’s a pretty safe sign that you’re doing more than the shops and back so it was nice to have a short competitive burst together with Sonia.

In the end, I apologise for sucking her back wheel because I wasn’t going to be able to reciprocate. I’m not sure why I did that but perhaps it was chagrin at having been such a commuter hoon. Either that or I wish that fellow riders would do likewise as they finished being dragged to work on someone else’s pedal storm. I’m not sure I really mean that but it will do for this morning.

Was I totally wrong?
Do you ever find yourself racing the rabbit to work?

*did I just say “training plan”?

in position

So, Murray, this is what the bike looks like, well, a very short/small section of that bike which is being positioned.

The poor thing has only had a few rides out on the road which is an utter tragedy but I am sure that if you are in Brisbane you are aware that the weather is crap. Or has been crap or how come it’s shining at the moment and I’m sitting in my lounge looking at three bikes and not riding one of them?

Sorry. I digress, I have to go for a ride.

In the mean time, please see attached photo for a very brief glimpse of what it is like to have a bike positioning. Sure, it costs more money than many a casual rider would fork out but I have to say all the physio/osteo/knee-anxiety was quite expensive too and really I should have considered getting a bit that fit me from the freaking start. The positioning was not at all as intimidating as I thought it would be and I basically approve of anything that requires a spirit level* and although my knee is still tight as buggery, it’s not hurting on the bike per se (as was the case with Jana) and I’m genuinely excited about the future of riding. If only I could find some new amount of time in the day to do all this stretching.

Oh wait, I have a photo here somewhere!

Now, I’m not sure what all this dribble is after the audio player, but you should listen to this tUnE-yArDs song. It’s most fun.

What is it?

About a dead city road on a bike?

Feels almost like anarchy.

Some I know love the city tussle, racing cars for lights, finding the invisible line between helter and skelter.

But me, I love the early morning ride through once bustling and now ghost town city streets.

Brisbane – it sucks that you go to bed so early on week nights, but I love that you sleep in on Sunday’s!

What about you?
Do you like it empty?
Or do you like it full?

how did the dutch

Get such cute accents?

And such cute bike paths?

So, watch this, and read this, and let me know what you think?

And then, when you’re feeling a weeny bit like that narration was kind of slow, watch this instead, which came via another Dutch Master.

Surely, we could all get over Warnie (god, what hell would it be to be under him?) and have ourselves a car free Sunday? If a city like Jakarta can do it, what about Brisbane/Melbourne?

Doesn’t seem that hard?
